A Platter of Cake-A-Boo from Pantai Indah Kapuk

My friend Kiky is having her 20th birthday this week and my college buddies has been planning to throw her a birthday surprise after class. As we thought that bringing round cake is getting pretty repetitive, my friends decided to buy several cakes from Cake-A-Boo a day before conducting the master plan. I was so excited to hear this news since I've been wanting to try out the cake shop since its opening -- yet only then I was finally able to try some of the menu out, thanks to Melisa for bringing the cake from Pantai Indah Kapuk to Depok safely.

The surprise were pretty simple, a group of people participated in the attempt as my friend was having her dance pratice. Then... ta-da! The cake was brought upon her and there were a little performance for her as there were guitar playing along to people singing to Taylor Swift's 'Style'; a song by her favorite artist.

Hugs and thank yous were thrown here and there. The birthday girl herself seemed pretty excited about the cake and it was only minutes after that people begun to dig in with the cakes. The five little platter of cakes were then shared. Luckily I got to try out bits of pieces from all of them. Keep in mind that the cake has been safely kept for almost 24-hour by room temperature.

Dice Cake (IDR 25.000)

Vanilla sponge cake layered with marshmallow and oreo. It was a good sponge cake but nothing special (and kinda disappointed that the dice spots are not present in every visible sides) since I did not get to taste any oreo or marshmallow texture and flavor within my bite. Oh, the perks of sharing :)

Mini Bomb (IDR 40.000)

Chocolate sponge cake, hazelnut mousse and a said 'surprise' which are colorful chocolate candy which I cannot find within the cake. Regardless the cake were very delicious! The hazelnut-chocolate combination can never really fail and this one takes it up a notch by its unique shape and plentiful portion.

Volcano (IDR 35.000)

Chocolate crumble cake covered by chocolate mousse, drizzled with chocolate and strawberry sauce. The mousse were really fluggy and sweet; the shape actually holds up which really amazes me but the crunch is almost non-existant in my opinion. The questionable thing is to the clear jelly-like thingy topping the volcano (supposedly the eruption) that does not really serve any purpose to the dish besides for the aesthetic aspect.

Cheese Trap (IDR 35.000)
Although not pictured clearly, the cheesecake is presented with white chocolate bordering the cake. The top of the cake was spreaded with peanut butter, however I didn't taste its peanut butter bit since the part were placed for the candles. Yet the cheesecake itself is a delight; it is soft, sweet and milky at its best. I liked its combination with white chocolate that were easy to cut. The taste does not detoriate although its is left unrefrigerated since morning. This was my favorite by the day.

Nutella Burger (IDR 35.000)

Red velvet bun, crunchy Nutella patty topped with assorted fruits. The Nutella patty itself were a unique twist since its crunch added another layer to the dish; yet I don't really favor the combination with the fruit as I wasn't expecting tanginess in eating this particular cake but it do totally add a plus to its detail for aesthetic factor and flavor. The bun were unfortunately a bit dry yet tasted brioche-like as it has a touch of sweetness.

It was a great day nevertheless and I'm happy that the surprise came out as a success, thanks to the people who had been coordinating it since days before. Most important of all is that the birthday girl is happy (I mean, look at that smile!). As for the cakes from Cake-A-Boo itself, it was all delicious and pretty as picutre but I would still love to actually visit the place and grab out their cakes selection from its conveyor belt. There are so many things to try out more!

Post-Appendicitis Meals and Recovery

Last Thursday I have to underwent an appendicitis surgery since my stomach had been hurting for a couple of days and my appendix had been getting worse. The surgery came in sudden as the notice come as an emergency. I ended up staying for two nights at Siloam Hospitals and is now going through recovery. My brother then brought my camera on the second day as my surgery ended so I can spend some time taking pictures and so I don't feel uneasy being at the hospital.

Breakfast

Breakfast was such a relief because I have to spent 8+ hours fasting for the surgery. The first day I was in the hospital I only drank a cup of sweet tea after the surgery since I skipped good chunk of breakfast at home. The bubur sumsum I got for breakfast were such delight that I asked for the same menu on the next day.

Snacks

For a day I would get three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) as well as two session of snacks in the morning and afternoon. The snacks I got were delicious and quite enjoyable, especially the pastries -- far from my expectation from hospital food.

Lunch - Asian Option

As I shall slowly adapt into eating solid foods as my intestine has gone through quite some work due to the surgery, so I was advised to watch my intake for foods that would be hard to digest. My lunch consisted of the dreaded hospital porridge alongside with soup and veggies that were not my ideal. However by dinner I can got a hold of solid foods and some hearty protein, which I'm really happy about.

Dinner - Western Option

The thing I love about the meal here is that it comes with option! The western meal sounded the most appetizing for me hence I picked the menu. For dinner I got a plate of grilled chicken and mash as my main course. I was actually requesting for my lunch coming from the western meal option too, however it is altered into the Asian option during prep. It comes from three option of Asian meal, Healthy meal, and Western meal.

As my family members accompanied me during my stay they got some of their meal from the canteen by the lobby with menu ranging from fried rice, spaghetti, dimsum, to hainanese chicken. The hospital also got Imperial Cakery upon its entrance, and their chicken siumai were such a delight. Priced at Rp32.500 (incl. tax) for five generous serving of dumpling were so worth it; I even took some for myself even though the nurses has been warning me to not outside foods while staying in the hospital hehe. The bacang  or zongzi from Imperial Bakery however was a bit too sweet for my taste (yes, I sneak those too).

I honestly think the hospital stay wasn't bad at all! Although I have to miss a test and undertake a surgery, it has become a pretty unique experience for me. I was happy with my room and the view its offer, facing to the road of T.B. Simatupang. I am grateful for my family and friends for their support and wishes, as well for the hospital team for their care. With this post, I dedicate my thanks to all of the people who had supported me during my lows. Looking forward to getting back in good health!

The Cat Cabin at Kemang

During the Good Friday break my high school buddy and I decided to spend it by visiting The Cat Cabin, a newly established cat cafe that is open in mid-February 2015. As there were two competing Cat Cafes within the Kemang area alone, it took several consideration into choosing The Cat Cabin yet I ultimately pick out this very place due to its more strategic location in the main road and the fact that the staff took my phone reservation very well. We ultimately arrive 30 minutes earlier than our reservation, but it was such a relief knowing that the place were actually not as crowded as expected on a national holiday.

The Cat Cabin was not really huge in size; it is located on the second floor of their venue building (yet it will require you to take the stair two level up) and its entrance firstly will welcome you into their food counter as they sell various types of cat-shaped sweets and other delicacy while at the same time you will be reminded of the place's house rule and the entrance fee to allow you to get started inside the actual cafe that is separated by another glass door to the room -- that you can see earlier customers playing with the cats as you wait. The price for one adult on our arrival is Rp50.000 and Rp35.000 for children for the first hour and Rp35.000 for adult and Rp25.000 for children for every hour you extend.

We did not order any food or beverages, yet some snacks in jars and cups of infused water are available within the restaurant. Be careful as eating inside the actual cafe can get a bit tricky with all the cats surrounding you! 

By the time of our visit, there were about 6 cats playing around with various cutomer in the limited space of the cafe. Its space definitely allows you to move freely with some of your new furry friends however not spacious enough to let you run around without bumping to another customer. In some cases the cats would only center to some particular group of customers and left me hanging (why....) and the store would be seemingly 'empty' in other areas without the presence of the cat. However it is totally understandable as the cats work in shifts and some were taking some good long nap at the time. If you are tired of playing with the cats, grab a book and enjoy reading in peace on their sofas or pick out some props and take a lot of pictures! The place were really cute by its own with its cat-inspired decoration.

I actually had more fun taking pictures with the props than playing with the cats as I actually am not a big cat person and there were not a lot type of cats available to play with. It was definitely and experience and it can be a very relaxing experience to play with these feline friends however it would definitely be best if you really come in when the cafe is short in customer to get more personal  with the cats as the cafe gets crowded really easily, even with its 15 person entry limit. But try for yourself for such an interesting new experience in Jakarta!
