Tempura Tendon Tenya at Cilandak

A week before I went to take these pictures at Tempura Tendon Tenya is the first time I've ever gone to the restaurant that is said to be a branch of the original Tempura Tendon Tenya in Japan. I've always been curious of the place so I decided to dine in alone, ordered their All Star Udon Set (Cold) priced at Rp85.000. I was blown away because the texture of the cold udon as it is very chewy, thinner than the usual prepackaged udon we usually found in supermarkets (and frankly what most Japanese restaurant uses). It is said that the udon resemble to the ones they had in Japan and were made in-house. I was very impressed and decided to go for a second time the next week.

Ebi Curry Udon (IDR 60.000)
Mesmerized by their udon, I decided to try out their hot udon selection on this second visit. The curry udon is not like the typical Japanese curry sauce I found as it is runny and tasted similar to the regular niku udon sauce but now with hints of curry seasoning and lots of onions. The texture of the udon was nice, but not as great as when it was served cold. The curry soup is delicious but I'd prefer the thicker ones any day. The ebi tempura is juicy and the batter were fluffy -- not really crunchy as we'd all initially expect.

Chicken Tendon (IDR 35.000)
With the amazing price, you'll geta bowl of rice topped with two piece of filleted chicken breast alongside with a half-boiled egg. The chicken were tender and the tempura better is not very crunchy, the half-boiled egg adds another silkiness to the whole meal and goes well with the tempura sauce that is drizzled on top of the meal. The sauce is also available on the table alongside with chili powder to add more flavor to the dish. I used plenty of extra sauce, the don tare, to enhance the flavor as the seasoning of the tori tempura were a bit too subtle when matched with the plain white rice. The miso soup were also very subtle and not too savory, a good side to the meal but I think it will make the tempura batter too soggy if mixed.

My second visit leaves a good note but nothing beats the cold udon. The service here is okay, there's only one or two waitstaff available and were pretty busy that it took some time to wait for the table. The price really are very appropriate for the quality they offer so it's worth the try (as I ended up really loving this!). I might need a good dose of their cold udon soon with lots of the don-tare!
